The Ultimate Recipe for Traditional Swedish Meatballs

I have always loved a good comforting dish of Swedish meatballs, and now as I grow older, I appreciate the vast array of flavours and styles of different recipes from around the world.

This recipe has a traditional approach as my grandmother would have made it. While the ingredients are nothing extravagant, it is the attention to detail and love put into the recipe that makes it a delicious experience.

Meatballs:

  • Beef - 80% Lean ground beef.
  • Pork - Adds additional flavour.
  • Spices - Specifically nutmeg to get that classic flavour.
  • Milk - Added to moisten breadcrumbs.
  • Breadcrumbs - The binding ingredient to structure the meatball.
  • Onion - Finely diced, adds a great depth of flavour.
  • Garlic - Finely minced, also adds flavour.

Gravy:

  • Butter - Salted or unsalted: Adds flavour.
  • Flour - Helps to thicken the gravy.
  • Beef Broth - Creates more flavour and the proper consistency.
  • Heavy Cream - The final step in creating the most creamy and luscious sauce.

Will we ever know the true origins of the Swedish Meatball?

The origins of the famous recipe for Swedish Meatballs have remained a mystery for some time. A recent article I read by Pete O'Connell dives into this tumultuous topic, “Despite Their Name, Swedish Meatballs Aren’t From Sweden”. It uncovers some of the complex history of the dish and tracks it back to as far as the 1700s! The article provides an unbiased perspective surrounding the topic and even mentions that “Someone had to be the very first to craft the beloved Swedish delicacy, but who that was we’ll never know”, which perfectly sums up the controversy. If you want to read more about this topic, please visit the original article. We may never receive a definitive answer but one thing that I know is certain, wherever the dish came from, it is delicious.

My Favourite Picnic Spot

My favourite picnic spot is Hawrelak Park because it has lots of trees, which provide a great picnic atmosphere. To get to the park and try out this spot after school, take 117 Ave NW to 106 St. Drive along Princess Elizabeth Ave NW and then take 116 St NW to 111 Ave NW. Follow 111 Ave NW and Groat Rd NW S. Then take a slight right, and you will reach Hawrelak Park, where you can find parking on your right.
